ESTHER PEARL WATSON
ESTHER PEARL WATSON was born in 1973 in Frankfurt, Germany. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Watson received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2012 and her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1995. His work is deeply personal and often draws inspiration from his unconventional childhood experiences in Texas, where his father, an Italian immigrant, tried to build a working flying saucer in their backyard. This unique childhood, filled with dreams of space travel and the American dream, strongly influences his artistic narrative.
His paintings are characterized by a flat style, typical of folk art, and often incorporate elements such as aluminum foil and glitter to depict UFOs and other fantastical elements. These works blend her past and present, reflecting her childhood memories along with her experiences as a mother and caregiver.
Watson’s work has been exhibited extensively, with recent shows including Sightings at the Sun Valley Museum of Art, Guardian of Eden at the Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York and A Very Luminous Vision at Vielmetter Los Angeles, as well as in a recent group exhibition entitled Texas Tornados, at the Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea in Milan. She is also known for her acclaimed comic book series Unlovable, published in Bust Magazine and by Fantagraphics.
In addition to her artistic practice, Watson is involved in teaching, working as an instructor at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design and participating in art residencies at various institutions.
Esther Pearl Watson’s work continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of personal history and imaginative storytelling, making her a relevant figure in contemporary art.
