Silvia Negrini – Densamente Spopolato

curated by Ivan Quaroni

Antonio Colombo is pleased to present in the Magic Bus project room of his gallery, Densamente Spopolato, Silvia Negrini solo show, curated by Ivan Quaroni. The show opens on Thursday, February 20th, in parallel with Anamnesi, Arduino Cantafora solo show in the main space of the gallery.

Negrini’s painting, though minimal and concise, never completely abandons figurative representation, remaining on the verge of pure abstraction. Despite her elegant expressive synthesis, the subjects of her paintings – primarily landscapes, interiors, or random ojects methodically arranged in orderly spaces – remain recognizable but devoid of any emotional or sentimental attachement from the artist.

While pushing the representation on the edge of abstraction, Negrini always stays within the realm of an analog depiction of tangible objects, even though the image is subsequently schematized and distilled into logical and regular forms, carefully spread across her panels.

In Silvia Negrini’s painting it is the language that influences the representation, binding it within a grammar dominated by geometric and perspectival rigor. This formalist approach is expressed through an economy of minimal gestures, by which the subjects are shaped into polygons and schematic forms, aiming to capture the unchanging essence of reality, and the essential, immutable nature of things. This is the reason why Negrini’s painting are unhabited, without any trace of human presence. The phenomenal space is transformed by the artist into an unperturbed and rarefied realm or, one might say, a densely unpopulated place.

Silvia Negrini was born in Sondrio in 1982. She currently lives and works in Milan.
After graduating from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, she has conducted research on painting by using a minimalist language to depict interior landscapes or isolated, desolate places, seen as immobile backdrops awaiting passage of someone, or as the site of an event that has just taken place. Her works are marked by a synthetic, rigorous and schematic construction. Her work has been featured in various group and solo exhibitions. The latest experiences include VIR, Via Farini in Residence in 2022, E_solo Silvia Negrini at Luogo-E, curated by Luciano Passoni and Federica Mutti in Bergamo in 2022, and Muri d’artista, curated by Rossella Farinotti, for the Cittadella degli Archivi of the municipality of Milan.
