GROTESK

GROTESK (Kimou Meyer) is a Swiss artist and graphic designer born in 1974 in Geneva. He currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
He grew up in Switzerland and developed a deep interest in art and design through the influence of his parents, who ran a scale model workshop. His academic training took place in Belgium, where he studied design and communication.
Grotesk is known for his distinctive visual style that combines elements of European minimalism with the chaotic aesthetics of hip hop and skate culture. His artistic career took off after moving to New York in 1999, where he began collaborating with important figures in the art and design world. He co-founded Doubleday Cartwright, a creative agency specializing in sports culture, and Victory Journal, a magazine exploring the glories and ignominies of sports globally.
His works range from illustrations to wood carvings, often featuring humorous and critical use of cultural artifacts. A notable example of his work is the T.SQ Newsstand installation in Times Square, an homage to the now dying newspaper stands in New York City. This project involved collaborations with Victory Journal and Juxtapoz Magazine, as well as included contributions from prominent New York City graffiti artists.
Grotesk’s most significant commercial projects include the redesign of the Milwaukee Bucks logo and brand development for David Beckham’s soccer team, Inter Miami CF. In addition to his artistic work, Grotesk works as a creative director for Nike.
With his ability to blend diverse influences and a continuous drive for visual innovation, Grotesk remains an influential figure in the contemporary art and design scene.
